DJ Mixing Software |
Here are the most popular programs right now for live mixing on Windows. Since there are two distinct types of mobile PC DJ (wedding/party & club/beat-mixing), we indicate the software's general leaning in the review. They are sorted by their rating, and Here is how we rate.

|

DJ Power |
DJ Power v3.90Has many features and can do video and karaoke as well. Also has a high price tag and can be confusing as to all it's options and add ons. They would like you to buy their computers as well. Hardware incompatibilities abound. Only for the geek pro who has a lot of money and time to spend on it.

PCDJ Red VRM |
PCDJ Red VRMWe put the red back up here because we had problems getting a decent test of FX (you can read that below). Red is a basic DJ package that works pretty well, although we have read of some hardware and version inconsistencies (we did not experience any in our testing). The record case leaves some room for improvement in our opinion, but other that that, it performed the basic functions well. It is geared for the basic DJ for weddings/parties.

MixVibes Pro |
MixVibes Pro 5.1Has some effects, vinyl mode and waveform display. Seems pretty solid, and the price is not too bad. Seems more geared to the club DJ than the wedding/party jock. The controls are a bit small, although it does work with external controllers.

Traktor DJ Studio |
Traktor DJ Studio v2.6Seems to be geared more towards the club jock, then the wedding/party jock. Works with Stanton's FinalScratch 2 hardware. Not sure where the company is going though.

How we rate
|
We rate the software on a number of criteria
and importance: 1) Reliability: This is the number one factor, as having a program stop working or skip out on you while in front of a large number of people, can quickly destroy your reputation. 2) Ease of use: Can you find the controls quickly in a pressured environment. Are the controls big enough to use easily, and keyboard shortcuts intuitive. Can you locate a tune quickly. 3) Setup ease: Can you get this up and playing your tunes quickly, without having a degree in engineering, or having to call someone. 4) Features: Most of the programs all have the same basic features that most DJ's will use, so the weight of this criteria is lower. A lot of the features some harp on are seldom used in reality. 5) Support: Can you call or email, and get a quick, decent response to the issue, or are you put on hold, or your email never returned.
