Startup: Started up ok.

We had done our original review on an older copy of PC DJ FX, and it was somewhat of a decent program. We recently downloaded their latest version to see what the hype we had been reading on the DJ boards was about, and put it to the test.

The first thing we do with any DJ software, is to load a track and play it - basically the same as if you bought a new CD deck - pop the CD in and hit play. We used a tried and true MP3 track (same as we use for all our tests - Kid Rock's Cowboy @ 320 kbps).

That apparently was our first mistake, as our system locked up solid. Not your normal lockup either, it required pulling the battery out of the laptop and unplugging the power cord. A few reboots later (it was still looking for PC DJ stuff on startup), we were able to remove the package from our system, clean the registry, and get on with our lives.

The nice folks at PC DJ had sent an email after our download (which we do anonymously), so we decided to reply stating what had happened. The reply was "That is a common problem, just call us, and we'll tell you how to fix it.". No clue as to what that fix might be, as they didn't elaborate in their email???

I don't know about you, but if I need to call somebody to get their software to not break my machine, I would look elsewhere. Our hardware has never failed on other DJ software, and still continues fine now that we have removed FX.

Summary:

The lower end Red version is more stable, yet fairly simple. Either way, they want you to buy their controller as well, which adds mucho to the price. We know many, many people who have bought this product, only to put it on the shelf and use something else.
